Hi Everyone!

Welcome back! I hope you had a fun weekend! Happy Spring!!

Phys. Ed - Our Phys. Ed days this week are Tuesday and Wednesday.

Library - Our library day is on Thursday. Make sure you bring your book back so you can sign out another one.

Homework/Reading - The homework for the week is listed in the orange folder. The spelling words this week focus on adding /s/ to the end of the word when there is more than one. The word work activity focuses on this too. We have another reading comprehension story to do. Use the picture and title to answer the questions. In math we have been working on estimation. When we estimate we make a good guess of about how many are there. Look at each group of items, make a small group first and then circle the best estimate. Choose one book from the reading bag to read each night. Use the strategies we have been working on to help with the reading and record your book on the log sheet.

No School - There is no school for students on Friday March 25th, as it is a Professional Learning Day for teachers.

Water Bottles - Just a reminder for students to bring a water bottle with them. We can't drink from the fountains, but they can refill their bottles throughout the day.

Homework/Reading

  • The homework for the week is listed in the orange homework books.
  • This week our spelling words focus on the long /o/ and bossy /e/ vowel; /y/ at the end of words that says /i/ and /oo/, /o/ and /ou/ that have the same sound .  Go over them each night and practice spelling them. We will have our test on Friday.
  • The word work activity focuses on the short/o/ and long /o bossy /e/ vowel sounds. Look at the picture, say the word. Listen for the vowel sound. Spell the word and put in the vowel sound you hear. Pick 2 words and write a sentence for each one. Make sure your sentences begin and end properly and have good details. Circle the missing word for each sentence.
  • We have been working on reading comprehension and using pictures to help with reading and writing. Use the picture to answer the questions. Look carefully at the picture and decide if the answer is yes or no.
  • In Math we are using the calendar to do some problem solving. There is a calendar page and questions to answer using the calendar. As well we are continuing to work on using our strategies to help with adding and subtraction.
  • Choose one book from the reading bag to read each night. Use your strategies to help with the reading and record your book on the log sheet.

St. Patrick’s Day

  • St. Patrick’s Day is on Thursday March 17th.
  • Students and staff are asked to wear green on that day.

Cafeteria

  • Special Meal – This has been rescheduled for Thursday March 17th.
  • This will be the only meal offered on that day.

Water Bottles

  • Just a reminder that we can’t drink from the fountains.
  • Please send in a water bottle for your child to use at school. They can refill them during the day.

Spirit Week

  • This week is Spirit Week at Nelson Rural School. We have different theme days that students can participate in.
  • Tuesday – Mis-match Day
  • Wednesday – School Colours/Clothing  Day – Fundraiser prize draws.
  • Thursday – Crazy Hair/Crazy Hat Day
  • Friday – PJ or Jersey Day.

Masks

  • It is very important that students have proper fitting masks that cover their mouth and nose.
  • Please send 2 clean masks with your child each day.

Water Bottles

  • Just a reminder that we can’t drink from the fountains.
  • Please send in a water bottle for your child to use at school. They can refill them during the day.

March Break

  • Our March Break is the week of March 7th – March 11th.
  • Have a fun and relaxing week everyone!

Spell the word and put in the vowel sound you hear. Pick 2 words and write a sentence for each one. Make sure your sentences begin and end properly and have good details.

Pink Shirt Day

  • Wednesday February 23rd is Pink Shirt Day. We are asking all students and staff to wear pink.

Cafeteria

  • The Cafeteria Special Meal that was scheduled for Wednesday February 23rd, has been cancelled and will now be after the March Break.
  • The cafeteria was closed today and will be closed tomorrow February 23rd as well. Students will need to bring their own lunch.
  • It is to reopen on Thursday February 24th.

  • This is a review week for our spelling words. They are words we already had. Go over them each night and practice spelling them. We will have our test on Friday.

Flag Day

  • Tuesday February 15th is Canada Flag Day. We are asking all students and staff to wear red & white or Canada clothing if you have it.

 

Cafeteria Meal

  • The Cafeteria is having a February Special Meal on Thursday February 17th. The meal will be pancakes and ham, fruit cup, milk, and a cupcake. If your child would like to have the meal, pre-orders and payment is due on Tuesday February 15th. The cost is $7.00.

Family Day

  • Just a reminder that Monday February 21st is the Family Day holiday in New Brunswick, so there is no school.

  • Our spelling words this week focus on the long /ee/ vowel sound that says its own name. Go over them each night and practice spelling them. We will have our test on Friday.
  • The word work activity focuses on the long /ee/ vowel sound  and short /e/ vowel sounds. Look at the picture, say the word. Fill in what vowel sound you hear. Pick 2 /ee/ words and writ a sentence for each one. Make sure your sentences begin and end properly.
  • There is another activity on making /ee/ words and spelling /ee/ words. As well choose the spelling word missing from each sentence. Read each sentence, what word is missing and will make the sentence sound right. Circle the word.
  • In Math we are working on counting by 2s starting at 1, counting by 10s starting at 2 and adding and subtracting using strategies.
  • There is another activity on showing numbers in different ways. We have been working on different ways to show numbers. For each number show it using base ten blocks, tally mars and money.
  • Choose one book from the reading bag to read each night. Use your strategies to help with the reading and record your book on the log sheet.

  • Our library day is on Thursday. If you have any books still out, please return them so you can sign out another book.

Homework/Reading

  • The homework for the week is listed in the orange homework books.
  • Our spelling words this week focus on /ar/ words and some of the short vowel sounds we have worked on. Go over them each night and practice spelling them. We will have our test on Friday.
  • The word work activity focuses on /ar/ words as well. Read the story and highlight all the /ar/ words. Look at each box, say the word then circle the correct /ar/ spelling. Draw a picture to go with each /ar/ word.
  • There is another activity on blends and /ar/ words. Choose 2 of the /ar/ words and write a sentence for each one. Make sure your sentences begin and end properly and tell good details.
  • In Math we are working on counting with money using different coins. Remember to count by the value of each coin.
  • There is another activity on showing numbers in different ways. We have been working on different ways to show numbers. Look at each box and write the number in the box it is showing. Circle all the boxes that show the number 33.
  • Choose one book from the reading bag to read each night. Use your strategies to help with the reading and record your book on the log sheet.

Good Morning Grade 2!

Good News!! We will all be back to school on Monday January 31st!!

Happy Friday!! I hope that everyone had a great day yesterday! It is a warmer start to the day than yesterday, but still a little chilly. It is supposed to get warmer by the afternoon and we are expecting some snow.

Here are some activities you can work on today.

Orange Homework Books

  • Read – Choose a book to read from the reading bag. Use your strategies to help with the reading and record the book on the log sheet.
  • Spelling –  Spelling Test - Week 9 - The focus this week is on the long /a/ and bossy /e/ vowel sounds that make the /a/ say its own name. Use the test sheet in your pack and have someone call out the words for you. Spell them on the sheet. Good luck!

Home Learning Pack – Week 3

  • Word Work – Sight Words – Get out your sight word lists from the Home Learning Kit and see how many you know.
  • Math – Warm Up – Count and Move! – Put on a Jack Hartman Video, or count and move on your own. Try counting  by 10s starting at different numbers from 1 to 9.
  • Math – Sheet – Number 45 – Showing Numbers In Different Ways – Show the number 45 in different ways on each box on the sheet. We have worked on place value, base ten blocks, tally marks, odd and even and more and less.
  • Math Game – Play your favourite one from your Learning Pack or The Purple Board Sheet in the Home Learning Kit.
  • Writing/Art – Sheet – Winter Poster – All About My Favourite Things . If you didn’t get your poster done, you can finish it up. Check and see if you finished making your book from last week. If you didn’t get all the pages done you can work on this. We will read them to the class when we are all back together.
  • Read – Share a story book with someone at home; share one from Tumble Books. The link and passwords are on the class page. Maybe look for a winter story. Read some of the winter poems, this is a good way to practice fluency.

Calendar and Weather

  • Go over the calendar and weather. There is a calendar page added to the Documents section on the class page, or you might have a calendar at home to use. How many Fridays are there in this month? What day of the week did this month start on? What was the date 3 days ago?
  • Check the weblink for the weather. Compare the temperatures for the next 7 days. What is the high? What is the low? What will the temperature be on Monday? Are we getting a snowy, cloudy, or sunny day on Monday?

Technology/On-Line Programs

  • If you have access to a device and have some extra time, you can log on to Squiggle Park or Dream Box Math and play.

Outdoor Play/Physical Activity

  • It looks like it might be warmer this afternoon with some snow, so if you can, get outside to play and have fun!
  • Check Mrs. Dickson’s page for some fun Phys. Ed activities.

STEAM Time

  • If you have not done a STEAM activity yet this week, check the STEAM Board in the documents section or the ASD-N Cross Curricular BINGO Card in the Photo Galleries Section.

ASD-N Math Board

  • There are 2 Math Boards created by the District Math Leads in the Documents section. You might find an activity on one of the boards you would like to try.

Good Morning Grade 2!

I hope that everyone had a good day yesterday! Wow! What a cold start for the day! Hopefully it will warm up as the day goes on!!

Here are some activities you can work on today.

Orange Homework Books

  • Read – Choose a book to read from the reading bag. Use your strategies to help with the reading and record the book on the log sheet.
  • Spelling – Week 9 - The focus this week is on the long /a/ and bossy /e/ vowel sounds that make the /a/ say its own name. Go over the words, practice spelling them out loud. The /e/ is silent at the end.
  • Math -  Numbers and Operations – Addition and subtraction word problems. Read each problem and use your strategies to find the answers. Count by 1s to 40 and by 10s starting at 9 and going to 109.                                                            

Home Learning Pack – Week 3

  • Word Work – Sheet – Reading and Word Work –  /ake/ family  - Read the story. Then read again and highlight all the /ake/ words in the story. Read each question and circle the right answer. The answers are in the story.
  • Math – Warm Up – Count and Move! – Put on a Jack Hartman Video, or count and move on your own. Try counting backwards by 1s  from 100.
  • Math – Facts – Pick one box from the orange sheet to work on. Remember knowing your facts will help with adding and subtracting.
  • Math Game – Try Snowman Bump from your Learning Pack – This is an adding game plus 1, use your strategies to help.
  • Writing/Art – Sheet – Winter Poster – All About My Favourite Things - You got a start on this activity yesterday.  You can continue working on it today. There are instructions of what to do on the back of the sheet.  Write a sentence for each part and then draw a picture to go with it. There is a word sheet to help. Remember to add good details and begin and end your sentences the right way.
  • Read – Share a story book with someone at home; share one from Tumble Books. The link and passwords are on the class page. Read some of the winter poems, this is a good way to practice fluency.

Good Morning Grade 2!

I hope that everyone had a fun day yesterday and you were able to get out and play in the snow! It looks like we are in for another cold day with the windchill today!

Here are some activities you can work on today.

Orange Homework Books

  • Read – Choose a book to read from the reading bag. Use your strategies to help with the reading and record the book on the log sheet.
  • Spelling – Week 9 - The focus this week is on the long /a/ and bossy /e/ vowel sounds that make the /a/ say its own name. Go over the words, practice spelling them out loud. The /e/ is silent at the end.
  • Writing – 6+1 Writing Traits – We have been working on the Organization Trait – It is important when we write to tell things in order. Tell the steps in order you follow to brush your teeth. Make sure you write a complete sentence and draw and colour a picture for each step.

Home Learning Pack – Week 3

  • Word Work – Sheet – Week 9 Word Search – Can you find all 10 spelling words in the puzzle? When you find the word, circle it and spell it in the boxes below.
  • Math – Warm Up – Count and Move! – Put on a Jack Hartman Video, or count and move on your own. Try counting forwards by 2s to 100 or as high as you can go.
  • Math – Sheet – Subtraction – Colour By Code – Solve all the number sentences first and then use the code to colour. Make sure to use your strategies to help find the answers.
  • Math Game – Try Take From 13 Bump from your Learning Pack – This is a subtracting game, use your strategies to help.
  • Writing/Art – Sheet – Winter Poster – All About My Favourite Things - You can get a start on the poster today. There are instructions of what to do on the back of the sheet.  Write a sentence for each part and then draw a picture to go with it. There is a word sheet to help. Remember to add good details and begin and end your sentences the right way.
  • Read – Share a story book with someone at home; share one from Tumble Books. The link and passwords are on the class page. If you haven’t done the winter poems yet, maybe give them a try. This is a good way to practice fluency.

Good Morning Grade 2!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful day yesterday! It is forecasting some snow with the temperature warming up later, so it may be a good day to play outside!

Here are some activities you can work on today.

Orange Homework Books

  • Read – Choose a book to read from the reading bag. Use your strategies to help with the reading and record the book on the log sheet.
  • Spelling – Week 9 - The focus this week is on the long /a/ and bossy /e/ vowel sounds that make the /a/ say its own name. Go over the words, practice spelling them out loud. The /e/ is silent at the end.
  • Math – Numbers and Operations – Mental Math Strategies – Adding and Subtracting – Use your strategies to help solve the word problems and number sentences. Count by 10s starting at 1.

Home Learning Pack – Week 3

  • Word Work – Sheet – Colour By Spelling Word – Use the colour code to colour the space for each word. Practice spelling your words as you are colouring the space. There are 9 out of 10 of the spelling words in the code. Do you know what word is missing?
  • Math – Warm Up – Count and Move! – Put on a Jack Hartman Video, or count and move on your own. Try counting forwards to 100 by 5s and backwards from 100.
  • Math – Facts – Pick 1 box of facts from the orange sheet and work on them.
  • Math Game – Try Heart Bump from your Learning Pack – This is an adding game, use your strategies to help. You will need a deck of cards. There is a deck in the Home Learning Kit that was sent home at the beginning of the year.
  • Writing – Sheet - Winter – Opinion Writing – You Choose – Yesterday you did the first part of the writing, today you can finish it. Choose which sport you like best and colour the picture. Read over what you have so far and then continue. Make sure you have a good opening sentence; Tell 5 things that you like about the sport and why. That’s a sentence for each one. Have a good ending sentence. There is a word sheet to help. Remember to add good details and begin and end your sentences the right way.
  • Read – Share a story book with someone at home; share one from Tumble Books. The link and passwords are on the class page. You can try the winter poems too.

Outdoor Play/Physical Activity

  • It looks like the weather will be good to get outside, get some fresh air, and play in the snow! How many snowflakes can you catch?

  • Check the STEAM Board in the documents section for an activity to do or check the ASD-N Cross Curricular BINGO Card in the Photo Galleries Section.

Good Morning Grade 2!

I hope that everyone had a great weekend and enjoyed their days off! It is forecasting a sunny day and hopefully a little warmer too!

Here are some activities you can work on today.

Orange Homework Books

  • Read – Choose a book to read from the reading bag. Use your strategies to help with the reading and record the book on the log sheet.
  • Spelling – Week 9 - The focus this week is on the long /a/ and bossy /e/ vowel sounds that make the /a/ say its own name. Go over the words, practice spelling them out loud. The /e/ is silent at the end.
  • Word Work – Sheet – Word Family /ake/ words – Make new words by adding a letter or blend to the beginning of /ake/. Can you make some of our spelling words? Read each sentence and circle the word missing from the sentence. Does it make sense and sound right?

Home Learning Pack – Week 3

  • Math – Warm Up – Count and Move! – Put on a Jack Hartman Video, or count and move on your own. Try counting forwards to 100 by 1s or go as high as you can.
  • Math – Sheet – Numbers and Operations – Counting in different ways and Doubles – Colour the right path by counting in order by 2s to 50. How quick can you do your doubles? Put in the right answer.
  • Math Game – Try Monster Bump from your Learning Pack – This is an adding game, use your strategies to help.
  • Writing – Sheet - Winter – Opinion Writing – You Choose – Just do half today. Choose which sport you like best and colour the picture. Have a good opening sentence; Tell 5 things that you like about the sport and why. That’s a sentence for each one. Have a good ending sentence. There is a word sheet to help. Make sure you add good details and begin and end your sentences the right way.
  • Read – Share a story book with someone at home; share one from Tumble Books. The link and passwords are on the class page. You can try the winter poems too.

Good Morning Grade 2!

Happy Friday!! I hope that everyone had a good day yesterday! It looks like we are in for another cold day!!

Here are some activities you can work on today.

Orange Homework Books

  • Read – Choose a book to read from the reading bag. Use your strategies to help with the reading and record the book on the log sheet.
  • Spelling – Test - Week 8 - The focus this week is on the /o/ and /e/ vowel sounds that say their own name in shorter words. Use the test sheet in your pack and have someone at home call out the words for you. Spell them on the sheet. Good luck!!

Home Learning Pack – Week 2

  • Word Work – Sight Words – Get out your sight Word lists from the original Home Learning Kit and see how many you can do.
  • Math – Warm Up – Count and Move! – Put on a Jack Hartman Video, or count and move on your own. Try counting by 10s to 100 and backwards from 100.
  • Math – Sheet – Numbers and Operations – Adding and Subtracting – Read the word problems and find the answer. Adding and subtracting number sentences. Use your strategies to find the answers.
  • Math Game – Try  Snowman Bump or Math Card Game – What’s The Difference? Subtract – This one is in the purple Folder on the Math Card and Dice Games Board, in Your Home Learning Kit that was sent home at the beginning of the year.
  • Writing Making Your Own Book – There is a blank book to use in your pack. Continue writing and illustrating your book. Each page should tell one idea and the picture should be coloured and go with the writing on the page. Make sure your sentences begin and end properly. If you don’t get it all done, you can finish it up next week. I can’t wait to hear you read them when we are back at school!
  • Read – Share a story book with someone at home or share one from Tumble Books. The link and passwords are on the class page.

Good Morning Grade 2!

I hope that everyone had a fun day yesterday! It was a little colder yesterday, but today looks like it will warm up a little.

Here are some activities you can work on today.

Orange Homework Books

  • Read – Choose a book to read from the reading bag. Use your strategies to help with the reading and record the book on the log sheet.
  • Spelling – Week 8 - The focus this week is on the /o/ and /e/ vowel sounds that say their own name in shorter words. Go over the words, practice spelling them out loud.
  • Math – Sheet – Word Problems and Counting in Different Ways – Read each word problem and solve it. Use your strategies to help. Counting by 2s to 40 and backwards by 10s from 100.

Home Learning Pack – Week 2

  • Word Work – Sheet – Blends - /sh/ and /ch/. Look at each picture and say the word. Do you hear /sh/ or /ch/ at the beginning? Read the story at the bottom. Highlight the words in the story that have a /ch/ or a /sh/.
  • Math – Warm Up – Count and Move! – Put on a Jack Hartman Video, or count and move on your own. Try counting by 5s to 100, or as high as you can go.
  • Math – Facts – Pick 1 box/set of facts from the orange sheet and work on it.
  • Math Game – Try Go Fish – Facts For 11 – This one is in the purple folder on the Math Card and Dice Games Board, in Your Home Learning Kit that was sent home at the beginning of the year.
  • Writing Making Your Own Book – There is a blank book to use in your pack. Yesterday you came up with a title and ideas for your book. Today you can start writing and illustrating your book. Each page should tell one idea and the picture should be coloured and go with the writing on the page. Make sure your sentences begin and end properly.
  • Read – Share a story book with someone at home or share one from Tumble Books. The link and passwords are on the class page.

Good Morning Grade 2!

I hope that everyone enjoyed their day yesterday and that you were able to get outside to play in the snow!

Here are some activities you can work on today.

Orange Homework Books

  • Read – Choose a book to read from the reading bag. Use your strategies to help with the reading and record the book on the log sheet.
  • Spelling – Week 8 - The focus this week is on the /o/ and /e/ vowel sounds that say their own name in shorter words. Go over the words, practice spelling them out loud.
  • Writing – Sheet – 6+1 writing Traits – We were working on organizing our writing and telling things in order, so it makes sense and sounds right. It’s Winter! How do you get ready to go outside and play in the snow? What do you put on first? Tell the steps in order and draw and colour a picture to go with each step. Use the words at the bottom to help with your writing. Make sure your sentences begin and end properly.

Home Learning Pack – Week 2

  • Word Work – Sheet – Work 8 Spelling Words Word Search – Find all 10 spelling words in the puzzle. Practice spelling them in the boxes when you find them.
  • Math – Warm Up – Count and Move! – Put on a Jack Hartman Video, or count and move on your own. Try counting by 2s to 100, or as high as you can go.
  • Math – Sheet – Numbers and Operations – Adding and Subtracting – Read each word problem and solve it. Use your strategies to help solve the number sentences.
  • Math Game – Try Add It UP – Quick Facts – This one is in the purple Folder on the Math Card and Dice Games Board, in Your Home Learning Kit that was sent home at the beginning of the year.
  • Writing Making Your Own Book – There is a blank book to use in your pack. Today you can think of some ideas you would like to write a book about. Find a piece of paper to write your ideas on. Make a choice and come up with a title. You can get started on the book tomorrow.
  • Read – Share a story book with someone at home or share one from Tumble Books. The link and passwords are on the class page.
