The school year has started and our classroom is buzzing with excitement. We have been having so much fun getting to know one another and learning to work and play cooperatively. We have been learning more about our school and class rules and how to be safe on the playground. The children love story time and especially enjoy "Pete the Cat" books. We are off to a great start in Kindergarten. Check back soon for more updates :)

On Wednesday, June 13, K-1 is going to travel to the Magnetic Hill Zoo in Moncton for our year-end class trip. We will be going with Mrs, Sullivan-Goguen's Kindergarten class. This should be such a fun day. We are looking forward to seeing how many of our "Zoo-Phonics" animal friends are at the zoo. I will post pictures upon our return. Please check back. :)

Please come out to our "Meet the Teacher" evening on Thursday, September 21. We will begin at 5pm in our school cafeteria. Mr. Fitzpatrick and Mrs. Maloney will say a few words and introduce the staff. We will then move outside for a BBQ and some fun----I hear there is going to be a jumping castle!!!! It is a wonderful way to meet teachers that are working with your child and to meet/re-connect with friends, families and staff at Nelson Rural. We hope to see you all there!

Saturday, April 22 is Earth Day. I LOVE this day and really enjoy teaching my students ways they can make a difference and help them to deepen their interest/curiousity/passion/love for this wonderful planet of ours. We will be celebrating Earth Day at school on April 21. In honour of Earth day, we are hoping that the children will wear blue and green- if they can. We are also having a litterless lunch to reduce the amount of garbage we throw away. We have a presentation scheduled tomorrow afternoon from the Northumberland Solid Waste commission. The presentation will help the children gain more knowledge about our recycling programme in Miramichi and show them other ways they can help the planet. I have already noticed many "Earth Helpers" outside on the playground when I'm on duty. Way to go Nelson Kiddos!

Happy New Year! I wish you all the best in 2016. Just wanted to let you know of a great link the children and I found. http://pbskids.org/lions/games/monkeymatch.html It is excellent for practicing rhyme, beginning sounds and matching upper and lowercase letters. If your child has an opportunity to play on an ipad or computer then this is a great link.

We will be focusing on the sound of Nn next week and you can work with your child on generating words that begin with and end with the sound of Nn. You will notice that ending sounds can be tricky. :)

We are learning about germs in You and Your World and how to be a "Germ Buster"! We drew germs on Friday. We have also learned about different traditions that families have and how special celebrations such as "NEW YEARS" can be celebrated in so many different ways around the world.

We have 3 birthdays this month. Keegan and Logan have a birthday on the 25 and Ava has her birthday on the 27. Happy Birthday!

This month, Easton celebrated his 5th birthday!  We wished him a very happy year being 5! We had our Remembrance Day ceremony at school on November 10. It was very beautiful and I think everyone present were moved by the songs, poems and speeches. We also went skating with our buddies for the first time. It was so much fun! This week, the Calthumpians will be here to put on a very special show for us. I am looking forward to seeing them perform. We are presently working on all letter names and sounds, with our manin focus this week being on the letter Jj. Jellyfish are amazing creatures and we are learning about them as well. Please keep practicing each night. In Math, we are developing number sense through games and activities focusing on numbers between 1-10. In You and Your World, we have been working on "Healthy Lifestyles" . This week we will continue to learn more about healthy food choices and how to keep germs away. Our "Book Fair" begins next week. It will run from November 30-December 3. Family night will be on December 2.Christmas dinner will be on December 9 and our concert, on the 16.Please check out the links on the right hand side of the page that will take you to some excellent sites to help with your child's learning.

We had a birthday this week in our class. Happy Birthday Amelia! The children have been working on the sounds of all letters with the main focus being on d and e this week. We have been continuing our work on rhyme and isolating the beginning sound of words. We are slowly getting ourselves in the Halloween spirit by learning some new poems, reading books and doing crafts. While patterning is still our main focus in math, we have also started developing number sense through various counting activities. In You and Your World, we have been spending time talking about what makes each of us unique and special, making self-portraits, and also talking about our feelings and ways to express them appropriately.

There are some very exciting things going on in Mrs. Poole's classroom!"I Care" cat has been in to see us. So far we have learned 3 very important "I Care" rules: #1 We listen to each other. #2. Hands are for helping, not hurting. #3 We use "I Care" language. We are trying very hard to follow these rules. They are helping to make our class a fun place to be :) We have also started the "Warm Fuzzies" program in our class to acknowledge kindness and good behaviour. I can't wait to see how we do!We are working on the letter Cc. Our animal friend to help us with this letter and sound is Catina cat. While chatting with your little one ask them what other words start like the "c" sound in Catina cat. We read a story today called: Catina Cat Cooks! Ask your child what some of the things were that she cooked.I hope you are still working on rhyme. We are having fun with rhyme every day and hope you are seeing improvement at home. There are so many patterns everywhere in the world around us. We have been learning about basic patterns such as: red/blue/red/blue/red/blue (ABABABAB patterns) and big/small/small/big/small/small (ABBABBABB patterns).Picture re-takes are tomorrow. Please let your child know that you want re-takes and write me a note in your child's agenda. Thank you.
