Grade 5/6

We have a double period this morning so I will expect that you will complete Art Journaling Assignments #2 & 3. It is my hope that everyone will have a good bank of drafts when we return to school to practice revising and editing skills on. Both assignments are on this page and they are posted on my school teacher page and in Teams. I hope the work is reaching everyone and that everyone is reading at least 20 min per day and responding to their reading at least 2X per week.

Art Journaling Assignment #3

We will continue with the art journaling next week. This will help students to stay positive, they will get a chance to practice their writing and they will be developing a good bank of quick writes to practice revising and editing skills on.

Assignment #4
Indigenous Communities of NB
Grade 6H & 6/7M
Grade 5/6M FI - see the modified assignment at the end of the post
Create a table to organize the English name, Indigenous name and location of all the Indigenous communities in NB.
Although we are taught about how to create and read charts and tables in math it is a concept we need and can use in all subject areas. I want you to figure out how to sort this information so you will be able to find the information quickly.

You already have been given this assignment in computer class and were given a chart to fill in.

Indigenous Artists & Their Music
This will be an ongoing project, we will move into day 2 tomorrow. We will meet on Teams where I can explain in greater detail and answer questions.
This project will be completed in 2 parts.
~Shared Powerpoint ~ This is a class project and each student will contribute 2 slides to the finished project.
~Written biography
Part 1 ~ The shared Powerpoint.
Step #1 ~ Select a song with some traditional Indigenous elements. Such as;
*Use of traditional Indigenous instruments ie: hide drum, shakers, rattle, flute
*Inclusion of artists' Indigenous language
*Lyrics about issues or topics related to Indigenous people
Step # 2 ~ Answer the research questions in your SS scribbler.
What is the artist's full name?
When were they born?
Where were they born?
Where did they grow up?
What are some interesting facts about their early years?
What tribe do they affiliate themselves with?
What awards have they received?
What are some common themes or topics that their music addresses?
What genre do they perform?
What are some other interesting facts about this artist?
Step # 4 ~ Create a slide for the shared PowerPoint to profile the song. Include:
*Title and link to video.
*What elements of traditional Indigenous elements it demonstrates.
*Artist's name
Step # 5 ~ Create a slide for the shared PowerPoint to profile the artist. Include:
*Name
*Name of the indigenous community they are from
*Any awards they have received
*Common themes or topics their music addresses
*Anything that makes that person interesting

Assignment # 2 

Grade 5/6M, 6H & 7M

Although this is a health related lesson it will be used as an example for writing a reading response as well. 

We have been learning about multiple intelligences and will continue to explore this concept as the year goes on. 

1. Watch the video to the end.

2. Respond to the authors question at the end of the book as a quick write in your Writers Journal or on a piece of loose leaf. Write for 5-10 min. All quick write rules are to be used even at home. Quick writes are about getting your thoughts down quickly for possible later reference, editing and revision. 

I will repost the reading response PowerPoint which has an example of my response to this reading. Students are not to do a response to this book. They should be responding to the book they are presently reading or have just finished.

Reading Log & Reading Responses

 

Reading Log ~ Students are still expected to read and log every day. Their reading log should be in the front of their reading duo-tang. If they run out of space they can just continue logging on with a piece of loose leaf.

 

Reading Responses ~ The expectation for reading log was 2 entries per week. I am expecting that students have 10 well written responses by November 12th. 

* I posted examples of some reading responses on Oct. 27.

* Students have a list of possible response questions attached to the back of their Reading duo-tang, I also posted 3 additional questions on Friday. They are to respond to what they have read and not give a summary of what they have read.

* They can either write the responses in their duo-tangs or type them and send them to me for review. If they e-mail them to me I will read and respond to them.

* Responses are to be written in paragraph form ~ introduction, something from the reading, how it relates to the question they are answering and a conclusion. (see the "What if..." example) Responses will need to be at least 4 sentences long.

If they do not have their reading duo-tang at home they could respond to any of these questions on loose leaf and put them into their duo-tangs when they return to school. 

I will be expecting 12 reading response entries by the end of first term so this would be a good opportunity for all of my students, grades 5-7, to get these done.

Important note for all classes. Marks inside duo-tangs are an indication of how much of the assigned work has been completed note a grade. Having said that assigned class work is given to help students progress and completion of that work usually leads to higher levels of progress. 

I have not checked grade 5/6M’s duo- tangs yet but hope to pick them up on Friday.
