Grade 7 have been given the assignment of writing an essay for the Remembrance Day Contest. We will be working on this for the next 3 weeks. Please see the attached powerpoint lesson, remembrance_ contests.pptx, for details.

Students are presently preparing a bank of work to use when they write their slam poems in June. They should be researching and reading up on their topic at home as it is important that they are knowledgeable about their subject before they start writing their poem. Students have a folder where they are putting their work that must remain in the classroom but they may add to the folder with work they do at home if they wish. Each student has chosen their own social issue to write on. You could help by asking your child about their topic.
· What have they learned so far?
· What are their views on the issue?
· Are their opposing views? How would they respond to them in a debate?
· What are some important statistics on the topic?
· What are the most interesting facts they have learned to date.
· Have they learned anything that surprises them?
· Why did they pick this topic?
Homework – Students are to listen to the lyrics of songs for reference to social issues and print out (or be ready to print) the lyrics for 2 songs that make reference to the issue they are writing about.

“Making Meaningful Connections” Book Report Due tomorrow and not on May 27th as previously stated as students do not have school on the 27th.
Tomorrow is the last day for novel study scribblers. “Eagle Song” & “Bearwalker” have already been marked but students were given the opportunity to work on them some more and pass them back in to be re-marked. This will be the first and only marking for “Code Talker”.

This book report is due May 27th. Students were assigned this report on April 21st and should have started reading their pre-approved book. We have started an example text in class and students received an outline detailing what is expected in this report. They will need to be taking notes as they read.

It is expected that the work in these scribblers be completed in full sentences. Mark is based on the format of the answers as well as the answers themselves. Some students chose to take these duo-tangs home for a final revision before passing them in.
