Today was another great day with our Daily 5 Read to Self program.  The students need to be congratulated for all their efforts on reaching on task reading for a total of 12 minutes.  Our best effort yet!  Way to go boys and girls!  Once again I am very proud of all of you.

It is my pleasure to say that our class have made it to 8 minutes.  Our stamina is sure building and we hope that it keeps going up and up and up.  This means for all of you who are not familiar with the new Daily 5 program that the students in my room are able to work independently for 8 minutes without be distracted or off task.  What a BIG accomplishment!!  I am so proud of you all!   Can't wait to see where we are at by the end of the week.  Check back in later for another update!

Every Friday we send home our class mascot, Ginger the dog.  Today he is going home with Ben.  I know that he will have a fun time and that Ben will do a great job recording in Ginger's Journal all the fun activities he does with her.  Have fun Ben and we will read the journal entry on Monday.  Remember Ben that Ginger likes to be read to and see you both on Monday.

First term we will only be able to get to the library to hear wonderful stories from our new librarian on every other Wednesday.  Right now we share our library time with one of our Phys.Ed classes.  Our next library time will be next Wednesday, September 30th!

Our class has been very busy for the last couple of weeks working on our new program for Language Arts.  It is called The Daily Five.  Most of our students from kindergarten right up to upper elementary will be learning this program.  The kids have decided that good readers use whisper voices or read in their heads, stay in one place, keep their eyes on their books and continue reading for a sustained period of time.  As the days progress, we will be working on our stamina and reading for a sustained period of time.  We will work towards good reading for longer and longer periods of time to help our kids become better readers.  So far we are at 4 minutes and our final goal will be to reach 30 minutes!  Each day we are successful we gain one minute.  Boy who knew that reading would turn out to be this much fun!!  Keep an eye on our classroom page for an update on how were are doing with building our stamina.

Today on Sept 22/09 we were lucky enough to jump on bus 64 (Jodi's Bus).  She taught us about School Bus Safety.  We learned all about the routines and rules of how to ride a bus safely.  We even practised how to exit from the back of the bus in case of an emergency.  Boy was that ever fun!  Also we practised how to cross in front of the bus safely too.  The entire class had a great learning experience, so thanks Jodi.  After we returned to class we reviewed the rules and routines by watching this site http://www.schoolbussafety.ca/kids_index.html.  Now you too can go over the safe procedures for School Bus Safety with your child at home too.
