We are presently watching and writing Slam Poetry. Students should be watching examples being
performed on you-tube if they have access at home. They should be presently
taking notes and drafting their own poem which is due Wednesday. See the Rachel Rostad video entitled "Names" for an example of Slam Poetry.The key to success is picking the right topic. The poem should be about something that is important to the students.

Read – Students should be reading nightly
for 15 -45 min. AR goal has been given to every student and should be in their
writing duo-tang. Everyone should have read a realistic fiction, an
informational text, a mystery and a biography/autobiography/memoir by now and
be reading either a classic or a fantasy.
Spelling – Students are given new words each
Friday and are tested on those words the next Friday. This week they have a
sheet of 50 homonyms that they need to be able to spell and use properly.
Writing – We are beginning work on a character
sketch and students should be working on a venn diagram comparing themselves to
the main character in the book they are presently reading.

Language Arts Homework
Spelling Test - No
Excuse Words - These words are in the students writing
folders and as they are titled there is absolutely no excuse for misspelling
them.
Reading – All students have their first term AR goal.
The cutoff date for this goal is Nov.9.
- Students should be reading for 30 – 60 min/day
depending on their present reading level. That would be about 15 – 45 min. 5X /
week at home.

All students should have read and passed an AR test on a Realistic
Fiction by Monday if they are doing their assigned reading.
We have been moving at a very slow pace getting started into the
school year but things will soon be picking up.
