This week we walked with other students at Nelson Rural School to honour Terry Fox.  Our class learned what a great hero Terry is and how he thought more of others than himself.  He had a dream that each Canadian would give $1 to help find a cure for cancer.  He was touched by children younger than himself who had the disease.  He decided he would try to walk across Canada, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean to make people aware of the need for more cancer research.  He started his walk in St. John's Newfoundland, but after months of walking, Terry's cancer came back.  He had made it all the way to Thunder Bay, Ontario before he had to stop. Terry's dream still goes on and the children in Grade 1 Mac became part of that dream. They walked on Thursday afternoon and brought in money from their own piggy banks to help find a cure for Cancer.

A New Year in Grade 1 Mac Another year has started at Nelson Rural and the children in Grade 1 Mac are already hard at work.  We got busy on the first week of school practicing our poem for Grandparents Day and drawing pictures of our grandparents.  This will be the first entry in our Art Folder this year.  All our art work will be taken home in June to share with our family. Check out the Image Gallery to see photos of your children working on their grandparent faces.

This week our class got new Buddies from Mrs. Riordan Barry's class.  Some of our class have 2 Buddies because the grade 5 class has more children than ours.  We got together in the gym and the classroom to get our sneakers colored and cut out and put up on the gym wall.  On the day of the Terry Fox Walk we paired up and set out to our school's walking trails.  It was a great day - we got our exercise and dedicated it to a loved one.  We have pictures and videos of our fun day!

Dear Parents, We are busy settling into our new routines.  Some have gone well, while others need more practice.   A few need lots more practice.  Today we added some new videos to our page.  Four brave girls volunteered to read without first reading it to themselves.  They did a great job.  You can watch them by clicking on one of the titles under Video on the right side of the page.   This week we sent home our Borrow-a-Book and log book.  You can help your child write in the name of the book if he/she is having trouble, but it is ok if it is not perfect right now.  We are starting to work on printing skills but it will take some time before we have it mastered.
