Notes

The past two days in Grade 7P and 7H: (Silent Sustained Reading and response - 15 minutes each day)

  • We reviewed introductions and organizing our thoughts for writing speech, presentation notes and spoken word poems.
  • We analyzed the various speaking srategies of Rigged Game Slam Poetry video.
  • We learned a lesson on how to introduce your speech/presentation
  • We learned how to use cue cards and how to use point form.
  • We worked on developing introduction, body paragraphs/stanzas, and conclusions for speeches, spoken word poems and presentations.
  • Students competing in the middle school speak out contest are to be ready for Thursday. (April 28th)

Homework/Reminders:  Read 30 minutes, log and respond. Work on memorizing speech/spoken word poem/or presentation notes.

The past two days in Grade 8K and 8B: (Silent Sustained Reading and response - 15 minutes each day)

  • We reviewed organizing our research and thoughts into a speech/presentation planner and worked on completing it.  
  • We learned about various styles of effective introductions for our speeches and presentation with many different examples.
  • We worked on developing such introductions.
  • We reviewed the importance of looking for clues in our reading for meaning, especially in finding words we don't know the meaning to. (5 words on the Finding Vocabulary in Context chart are due tomorrow).
  • Students wrote a small motto, and reasoning for their motto about Canada, for a Grade 8 City of Miramichi Fire Deptartment contest, with the winner to be used on Canada Day.

Homework/Reminders:  Read 30 minutes, log and respond. Fill out vocabulary in context chart for the 5 words due tomorrow (April 22).

The past two days in Grade 7P and 7H: (Silent Sustained Reading and response - 15 minutes each day)

The past two days in Grade 8K and 8B: (Silent Sustained Reading and response - 15 minutes each day)

  • We reviewed Public Speaking Types of Delivery: Formal/Informal Speech, Spoken Word Poetry we discussed and saw an examples of the strengths/speaking strategies in each.
  • We chose our speech delivery type and brainstorm topic ideas, including funneling our top two ideas to be more specific and focused.
  • We learned about finding accurate and legitimate websites, and how to source where our information comes from, including puting words into our own words and stating who said the quotations we used on our Research Note Organizer - Website (located under documents on this teacher page).
  • Today we reviewed using our finding vocabulary in context organizer, and main idea map for determining importantce, with a new article of the week. This time we looked for 3-5 words we were unsure of and 3-4 main ideas individually. This assignment will be completed during Monday's class, including a class debrief discussion.

  • We reviewed Public Speaking Types of Delivery: Formal/Informal Speech, Spoken Word Poetry we discussed and saw an examples of the strengths/speaking strategies in each.
  • We chose our speech delivery type and brainstorm topic ideas, including funneling our top two ideas to be more specific and focused.

Today in Grade 7P and 7H: (Silent Sustained Reading and response - 15 minutes)

  • Vocabulary in Context: Students were given a Finding Vocabulary in Context organizer (which is also under documents on this teacher page) and were asked to fill out any new words found in today's reading.
  • We wrote a quick write for our idea page on The Awesome and Not So Awesome things in life.
  • We reviewed Public Speaking Types of Delivery: Formal/Informal Speech, Spoken Word Poetry and today we discussed and saw an example of formal presenation.
  • We began to talk about choosing our speech delivery type and brainstorm topic ideas.

Today in Grade 8K and 8B: (Silent Sustained Reading and response - 15 minutes)

  • Vocabulary in Context: We reviewed finding 4- 5 words with your new found comprehending vocabulary in context skills and used them with a Finding Vocabulary in Context Organizer, with strategies to help from the news article.
  • We examined how clues were used to help find meaning for your words, as well as the strategies you used. We began to look at determining what were the most important paragraphs of the article.
  • Pubic Speaking: We examined and studied our new sheet on Public Speaking Strategies for Success.
  • Tomorrow: We will review Public Speaking Strategies for Success, and study indicators of strong and weak speaking. Then we will  judge Mr. Bosma as he gives some small mini speeches, writing down idicators for his success and difficulties. Finally, we will discuss and learn to understand the three types of speaking assignments: Spoken Word Poetry, Formal/Informal Speech and Presentation.

  • We reviewed finding at least one word from our reading which we were unsure of the meaning. We used the word itself, as well as clues from the sentence it was in and surrounding sentences and students wrote them down in their Word Bank section.
  • We took our new found comprehending vocabulary in context skills and used them with a Finding Vocabulary in Context Organizer, with strategies to help.
  • We then read the article Boaty McBoatface Leads Online Poll to name 200M Research Vessel  and in groups used our organizer and newly learned skills to find 3-5 words in the article and fill out the chart. We did this after Mr. Bosma demonstrated how this should work with the chart. 
  • Tomorrow: We will complete this activity and determine the most important 3 paragraphs of the article.
  • We will also recognize strong and weak speaking traits after demonstrations by yours truly - Mr. B.

  • We practiced finding at least one word from our reading which we were unsure of the meaning. We used the word itself, as well as clues from the sentence it was in and surrounding sentences and students wrote them down in their Reading Skills section.
  • Public Speaking Unit: We learned about the importance of pronouncing words correctily, and the meaning of enunciation. Using interactive games on the smartboard we practiced enunciation of various tongue twister sentences.
  • We reviewed the important Speech Writing Strategies for Success.

Homework/Reminders:  Complete meanings and clues from word (vocabulary in context) during today's reading time.

  • We reviewed the fears of public speaking, why we need public speaking and the jobs which use public speaking.
  • Next class on public speaking we will further discuss the jobs which use public speaking, and practice both the art of pronouncing and enunciating words while speaking.
